THE MUD HEN
The Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry teamed up with local Alaskan Artist James Havens to celebrate Alaska's historical aviation past by issuing their first annual limited edition print titled "THE MUD HEN."   This print features Anchorage's first plane, the Boeing Model C which belonged to Mr. Charles Hammondtree of Anchorage in the early 1920's. This plane was nick named "The Mud Hen" by a few of the old timers for its gray standard navy coloring, its markings, and its landing and taking off on Turnagain Arm's silt filled waters and mud caked beaches. The C Models were initially created to be used as US Navy training planes.   Mr. Hammondtree purchased the plane in a surplus military auction in Washington State. The plane was disassembled and shipped to Anchorage where it was reassembled at the old dock in the Port of Anchorage in 1922.   This print shows "The Mud Hen" flying over Cook Inlet and Anchorage's Ship Creek. In the distance is the Delaney Park Strip which had just recently been cleared to serve as Anchorage's only airstrip at that time. In the distance are the Chugach Mountains.
